Photo too dark?
Hit the Too Dark one-click fix, or drag Exposure and Shadows up. The histogram will tell you when you've recovered enough detail.
Looks flat and dull?
Raise Contrast and Clarity, drop Shadows slightly. The Add Punch preset does this in one click.
What's the Histogram for?
It shows the distribution of light in your photo. Pushed to the left = too dark. Pushed right = too bright. A good photo fills the middle with no hard clipping at either edge.
