What is EXIF data?

Hidden data in every photo

EXIF (Exchangeable Image Format) is metadata baked into every JPEG or TIFF by your camera or phone. It stores your exact settings, device, and often your GPS coordinates.

Your location is in there

Most smartphones embed precise GPS coordinates by default. Anyone who receives your original photo can extract the exact location โ€” including your home address.

When to check EXIF

Before sharing photos publicly, selling stock photos, or posting on social media. Many platforms strip EXIF on upload โ€” but not all, and not always.

How to remove EXIF

Screenshot the photo, use an EXIF-stripping app, or export via a photo editor. Social platforms like Instagram and Twitter strip EXIF, but WhatsApp and email do not.
