What you need to know about print resolution
What is DPI?
DPI (Dots Per Inch) tells a printer how many ink dots to pack per inch. 300 DPI is the gold standard for photos โ you can't see individual dots at normal viewing distance. Below 150 DPI images look noticeably soft or pixelated.
How many pixels do I need?
Multiply: width (in) ร DPI = pixels needed. A 4ร6" photo at 300 DPI needs at least 1200ร1800 pixels. This calculator does it automatically for every common size.
Phone vs DSLR โ does it matter?
Modern flagship phones (12+ MP) print sharp up to A4 easily. A 12 MP shot (~4000ร3000 px) prints perfectly at 13ร10 inches at 300 DPI. Cropped heavily? Resolution drops fast โ check before printing.
What if my image is too small?
Two options: print smaller (check the safe size column), or upscale with an AI tool before printing. Upscaling blurry is still blurry โ better to print smaller and sharp than big and soft.
