Overnight Shift Calculator

For shifts that cross midnight. A 10 PM–6 AM shift subtracted normally comes out as ‑16 hours — this splits the shift at midnight so it always comes out right.

1 Count the minutes from shift start to midnight. For a 10:00 PM start, that's 2 hours.
2 Count the minutes from midnight to shift end. For a 6:00 AM end, that's 6 more hours.
3 Add the two segments: 2h + 6h = 8h, correctly spanning the boundary — never a negative number.
4 If a same-day shift is entered (end time later than start time on the same day), no midnight crossing happens and the tool does plain subtraction instead — no segment split is shown.
⚠ What this tool does and doesn't do
  • Only one midnight crossing is supported. This tool assumes a single shift lasting less than 24 hours. It cannot represent a shift spanning two full midnights.
  • If start and end time are identical (e.g. 09:00 → 09:00), the result is genuinely ambiguous — it could mean 0 hours or a full 24-hour shift. We don't guess; we ask you to correct one of the times.
  • No calendar dates are used, on purpose. This tool only takes a time of day for start and end, not specific dates. That's what makes the midnight-rollover math simple and reliable — but it also means it cannot account for daylight saving time changes that happen to fall during the shift (this is extremely rare and only matters twice a year, in regions that observe DST).
  • Unpaid break is a flat minute deduction from the gross total. We do not track when the break happened during the shift, and we do not enforce any jurisdiction's legal break requirements — that varies by region and employer.
  • Overtime, pay rates, and multi-day timesheets are intentionally not included. Overtime rules differ by country, state, and union contract, so a generic calculator can't get that right — we'd rather leave it out than give you a confidently wrong number.
  • This tool does not save or submit anything. Nothing you enter is stored — "Copy Result" just puts a text summary on your clipboard for you to paste wherever you need it.
